Gardening tools are a key element to both create and maintain one. Of course, there are a number of basic tools that are necessary. But once you’ve picked up the basic equipment, your individual circumstances will require you to get certain gardening tools that are used more often than not.
Here are 5 of these frequently-used tools:
1: Spading fork
You can use this implement to harvest root crops such as beets and carrots. Also, it comes in handy if you need to turn over the compost pile. You can also use it to turn over the soil too. Just make that you have sharp or square tines as thin, flat ones will bend during use.
2: Loppers
This is a long handled and bigger version of the hand pruner. Since the handles are much longer, they can extend your reach. Apart from this, the bigger and heavier jaws help you to cut branches that are up to at least one inch thick.
3: A Pruning Saw
If the lopper cannot cut what you want, then you can use this tool to saw it off. To do this right, make a cut on the underside of the limb first. This is preferred to the top down approach which will cause the branch to tear and break from the weight.
4: Mattock
This is an excellent tool to remove old and establish plantings. You can not only chop plants but also pry them out of the soil.
5: Cultivator
This tool helps you to break up crusty soil around plants. It usually has a cluster of tines on a long handle. You can also use a clam rake as a cultivator too.
