How to Purchase a Memory Foam Bed

Posted on January 16, 2015 By admin

A memory foam bed is very different from most other kinds of beds. Buying one can be an experience requiring quite a bit of research and test napping to find exactly what you want out of a bed. If you’re in the market for an upgrade, you’ll have better luck finding what you want if you know what you’re looking for. Here are some tips to help you in the buying process.

What Memory Foam Does

Memory foam is extremely innovative, and many people have utilized it for a better night of sleep. It is both pressure and temperature sensitive, providing a cushion for every part of the body. The special design of the foam enables it to “snap” back into its original shape after you have laid in it for an extended period of time. So the basic advantage is a custom-contoured sleeping surface that fits your body. Spring mattresses can provide lots of support, but not the kind that literally cushions and cradles your body.

Memory foam mattresses don’t usually require a box spring, but you may require one if you’re adding memory foam bed toppers to an existing spring mattress. If you are using a memory foam mattress, your bed will most likely be lower than a standard spring mattress so be sure you’re standing and getting into and out of bed before you make your final purchase.

Thickness and Density

Memory mattresses can vary in thickness from eight to about thirteen inches, and they come in all standard bed sizes. The beauty of memory foam is that any thickness will provide the same level of support to you, so thickness is largely related to your preference for bed height.

The density of the mattress will determine how the mattress will feel. Extremely dense mattresses tend to feel firmer on the back. Since density is measured in pounds, a higher weight usually indicates a firmer mattress.

Other Considerations

One thing that buyers need to be aware of is temperature. Memory foam does have a tendency to heat up with your body temperature. Some people find it difficult to sleep like this, but you can make adjustments in your bedding to offset the temperature increases. The type of foam also has something to do with temperature, so you may opt for a gel top if you’re looking for a cooler night of sleep. Of course, a spring mattress with a foam topper offers the same level of comfort without a drastic increase in temperature. If you’re unsure, order a topper for your existing bed and try it out.
