Improving Your Indoor Air Quality

Posted on November 6, 2015 By admin

Improving your indoor air quality is one of the most important things that you can do to raise the quality of life for you and your family. If anyone in your home suffers from medical conditions such as allergies or asthma, it’s critical for you to provide them with clean air. But anyone will be able to breathe easier and be less likely to get sick if they have a properly-ventilated home with a good air supply. The first step in improving the air quality in your house is to have clean heater and air conditioner filters.

Having clean air filters will help you to remove many dangerous particles from your home environment. Dust and dust mites are major problems that can be alleviated with proper household cleaning and the frequent installation of replacement furnace filters. In a single 1,500 square foot home, more than 40 pounds of dust is generated in a single year. Dust can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses along with dust mites. While the dust mites themselves don’t bite or make people sick, their droppings can cause serious problems for people with asthma or allergies.

Another obvious source of air pollution inside of a home is tobacco smoke. If you or someone you know smokes, the air that everyone in your home breathes will be contaminated with harmful carcinogens. Even if you don’t smoke, items inside your home that are combustible can also create dangerous chemicals. Stoves, heaters and fireplaces can all emit chemicals such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide that can have a negative effect on the health of your family.

There are several steps that you can take to improve the air quality of your home. Some of them are obvious, such as making sure that no one in your household smokes or cleaning on a regular basis. But many people ignore the value of regularly replacing the air filters in the HVAC systems, even though replacement filters can be found easily and affordable at sites such as Your Filter Connection.

Higher-end air filters will need to be replaced every three or four months; if you are using more inexpensive filters that are meant to be disposable, you will likely need to replace them on a monthly basis or even more frequently. How long a filter will last before it needs to be replaced will depend on several factors including the type of filter it is and how much particles your air system traps. It’s a good idea to visually inspect your air filters regularly to see if they need replacing.
