Working Moms: Juggling Work and Life

Gwyneth Paltrow: actress and Oscar winner, Glee guest star, wife of a rockstar and mother of two. That’s a lot of hats to wear for one person! How does she do it? In a recent issue of her online newsletter GOOP, she gives us a peek into her life. She’s an early riser and she makes sure her kids are fed their vitamins and drops them off at school before she starts work. Her schedule is packed with appointments and there never seems to be a dull moment. At the end of her day, she makes time to read to her kids and tuck them in.

What she doesn’t mention is that she probably has a full staff at her beck and call, ready and waiting to take care of her kids or make dinner or drive her around. Most of us don’t have that luxury or opportunity. What normal working moms are faced with is an endless cycle of hungry kids, grumpy husbands, and a mounting of dirty laundry, not to mention working a part- or fulltime job to boot.

Is there a way to get out of this cycle? Yes! The answer is working at home. Simple, isn’t it? The advantages of working at home are two-fold. One, you’re earning money and saving money at the same time. Without the commute, the bought lunch, the work clothes to buy, the occasional gift for co-workers, you’ll essentially be saving tons of money by staying at home. Second, you’re available to your family since you’re only a room away. You don’t have to hire a nanny or drop them off at daycare!

So what kind of jobs can stay at home moms do?

The list is endless! You could also go into business for yourself by setting up an eBay account and auctioning off things you don’t need or want. You can also find a supplier and sell their things for them!

If you really like children, you can offer your services as a daycare. Or turn your hobby into a business. If you are into gardening or collecting teapots, you can start a blog and offer advice and tips on your hobby. Believe me, there are always people out there who need information that you might have.

Remember that the opportunities are endless for working moms. Don’t forget, however, that you’re the glue that keeps the family together so don’t burn yourself out with your chosen job. Give yourself a break once in a while, you deserve it!
